Link to Sunday Service Recording

Text: Matthew 6:1 (ESV)

Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

Main Message

  • Jesus, in his sermon on the mount, pointed out three acts of righteousness, namely: Giving, Praying, Fasting.

  • Jesus, in his sermon on the mount, pointed out three acts of righteousness, namely: Giving, Praying, Fasting

  • Giving

    • JRW Stott - “Christian giving is to be marked by self-sacrifice and self-forgetfulness, not by self-congratulation.”

    • We should give in such a way that there is no temptation for others to glorify the giver rather than God.

  • Praying

    • Ask God’s will as he gives us our daily bread

    • It is God’s will for us to forgive others.

    • It is God’s will for us to be delivered from temptation and evil.

  • Fasting

    • Fasting is not a way to get God to do what we want.

    • Fasting changes us, not God.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is your motive in performing acts of righteousness? To gain favor from somebody or to please God.

  2. What influences us to give? To gain respect? To gain favoritism?

  3. How can we bring heaven down to earth?
