Your Shepherd Brings You Home

Week 6 - Your Shepherd Brings You Home

Text: Psalm 23:5  (ESV)

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Main Message

  • The Hebrew word for surely can be translated in English as “certainly”, “surety”, “truly”, “absolutely.”

  • Goodness means that which is pleasing, valuable or useful.

  • Mercy means compassion, a disposition to be kind and forgiving, and showing great kindness.

  • Follow means to pursue, chase, and attend closely upon.

  • Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

    • David is saying that only what is valuable, pleasing, useful, beneficial, and for our good will follow us all the days of our lives.

    • Psalm 34:8 (ESV) - Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

    • David in his Psalm is inviting us to experience God’s goodness.

  • And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever

    • David is looking forward to his final destination, and that is heaven.

    • God invites us to dwell in His house forever. We will dwell with Him in heaven someday, but while we are on earth, let us enjoy the presence of God.

    • Forever has already started. You are dwelling right now in His house, in His presence.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How do you respond in knowing that God pursue you with His goodness and mercy? What are your thoughts and emotions during that experience.

  2. Have you experienced any deeper understanding of compassion or loving-kindness now that the harsh, unkind, or merciless circumstance is in your past? If so, how?

  3. What do you think of when you hear the words “house of the Lord forever”? Do you ever dwell on heaven? Do you think about it much? Should you?
